Develop Your Team – Awayday

There is a place for the special day out for a team.

Seeing your colleagues in a different place with a different purpose can be really helpful in building relationships.

I think it matters to make this part of a coherent process rather than ‘just a jolly’.

Drawing Out Development

My own approach is to follow a structured design process with you, from researching the need to implementing the plan.

I have gained particular experience in using drawing and painting in this context. It’s very often useful because everyone, normally, is a novice and somewhat nervous.

Working with an artist/communications consultant, we construct a series of exercises to do which meet the purpose of the day.

While developing skill in drawing or painting is not normally the aim of the experience and no previous skill is necessary to benefit, participants are always amazed at what they are able to produce in a short time.

Examples of where we have used this approach include to:

  • Develop relationships and empathy in a new leadership team
  • Provide a shared experience for a department undergoing radical change
  • Explore what it means to be a leader
