our learning practices > self-managed learning
One the key issues facing organisations today is how people can be encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and not to expect to be passively trained. There is always more to learn and more opportunity to learn than can be contained in a training experience. One of the best ways to achieve this is to apply the thinking of self-managed learning.
A self managed learning initiative, based on the concepts of Action Learning, will start with understanding the aims of the company and enabling people to see what challenge they pose for them. Typically people will then be formed into learning sets. Each person will define their main learning challenge and then has air time to receive both support and challenge from the other members of the group. Meeting every 4-6 weeks, capability, confidence and performance develop along with strong team relationships.
This is an important learning methodology where people need to come together to learn in response to real challenges. It is a particularly effective method of helping leaders to develop as both effective managers and inspiring leaders.
