For years, Investors in People has provided the means by which companies have introduced or re-shaped good people management and learning practice. At best, it has helped transform both the culture of organisations and their performance.
The Current Version, introduced in January 2005 and mandatory from January 2006, adds some very challenging concepts and is more precise in what it expects organisations to achieve. Key challenges have proved to be:
- The requirement to involve employees in business planning,
- Defining, communicating and demonstrating the capabilities managers need to lead, manage and develop people effectively,
- Involving staff in decision making and promoting a sense of ownership and responsibility,
- Using evaluation of learning activities to inform both business strategy and people management and development practice.
This ‘raising of the bar’ takes place at a time when it is more difficult for companies to receive professional advice from government approved sources, e.g. Business Links, RDAs and LSCs.
