It is very easy when thinking about the challenge of change to focus on what is wrong or missing rather than building the future from an awareness of current strengths. In the UK we are particularly obsessed with re-inventing organisations on a regular basis, creating more disruption and expense than is necessary.

Appreciative Inquiry takes a different approach. It starts the process of change with engaging every one in the task of identifying what works well when the organisation is at its best. To put it another way, it’s a process of revealing the ‘positive core’ of an organisation or team. From understanding what works well it is possible to move forward to creating images of a desired future.

There is a process to an Appreciative Inquiry - Discovery, Dream, Design and Destiny – but it is much more than just another methodology. The spirit of the process is positive and generative and really builds commitment and passion to take responsibility for initiatives that build the future. That same spirit can be applied to regular people management practices such as Performance Review or Appraisal.

Appreciative Inquiry or AI is increasingly being recognised as an approach to organisational change that is in tune with the spirit of the age.
